How to Make Rosemary Oil at Home

Rosemary oil is an essential part of many recipes, but it’s also good for your hair and skin. The herb is rich in antioxidants and can be used to help with memory loss, improve thinning hair, or even relieve anxiety!

The good news is that you can make your own rosemary oil right at home. It’s a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to make sure you have access to the herb’s powerful benefits.

What You Need to Make Rosemary Oil

The only things you’ll need to make rosemary oil are fresh or dried rosemary sprigs and your choice of carrier oil. If you are using fresh rosemary, the leaves should be washed and then dried as soon as possible to avoid any rotting.

Dried rosemary should be stored in a cool, dry place so that it can dry out properly before being used. This will make the oil last longer.

You can make your own rosemary oil by boiling the sprigs in water for 15 minutes or simmering them for an hour in a slow cooker. Either method will yield a fragrant, high-quality rosemary oil.

Preparing Rosemary Oil

To prepare your rosemary oil, boil 5 cups of water in a large pot over medium-high heat. Drop in 5 sprigs of rosemary (one sprig for each cup of water). Once the mixture boils, remove it from the heat and let it sit for 25 minutes. Strain the mixture and pour it into a clean, glass jar. Store at room temperature away from sunlight and use within 3 months for the best results.

Dilute the Oil for Hair

The maximum dilution rate for rosemary essential oil is 3%. This is the maximum amount you can add to a tablespoon of carrier oil and still have enough to smell pleasantly.

It’s important to keep this in mind when preparing rosemary oil for hair because if you don’t do this, it will be too strong to use on your hair and scalp. You can dilute the rosemary oil by mixing it with another carrier oil such as olive or coconut. Then, massage it into your hair and scalp before washing it out.

For best results, try incorporating rosemary oil into your hair care routine at least once a week! You can either mix the rosemary oil into your shampoo or conditioner, or you can add a few drops to your favorite hair mask!

How Long Will Rosemary Oil Last?

The rosemary oil will last for several weeks, but if you like the scent to last longer, you can allow it to seep in for an extra month. This will give the infused oil time to fully infuse.

Infusing the oil is not a difficult process, but it does take time to seep the rosemary into the oil. If you’re not comfortable with leaving the jar on your windowsill, you can also strain it and store it in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry or a closet.
